Criteria for NHS Membership
Effective Spring 2022 - Initiation will take place in the Spring instead of the Fall. Letters were sent home in November of 2021, notifying students of this change.
To qualify as a candidate and be invited to apply for NHS membership at Bridgman High School, students entering their junior and senior year in the Fall of 2022 must have achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average and maintain the 3.5 GPA if accepted into membership. Spring of students sophomore and junior year, these students are invited to attend an informational meeting where applications are distributed to the candidates. The candidates are instructed to complete the applications, thoroughly, and return the application to the NHS advisors by a designated time and date. The application is an opportunity for each candidate to describe, in detail, their involvement in service, leadership, and character activities both in school and in the community during their high school tenure. Upon submission of the applications, the high school faculty is given the applications, and at their discretion, rate each candidate on a four point scale. Upon completion of these ratings, the applications are returned to Bridgman’s NHS Advisor(s). The Advisor(s) organize the faculty input forms and set up a meeting for the Faculty Council’s review. This prestigious five member council determines membership into the National Honor Society based on the student’s scores and accomplishments. Upon determining the new membership, letters of acceptance and rejection are immediately sent to all candidates.
In order to maintain active membership students must attend weekly meetings, maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, and submit 10 service hours per semester by the Friday prior to exams to the Vice President.
The Bridgman chapter of the National Honor Society is in compliance with suggested membership procedures. For more information regarding the National Honor Society visit www.nhs.us.
